Teide National Park

A network of national parks in the Canary Islands attempts to conserve their most characteristic ecosystems. Hence, the Mt. Teide National Park, in the centre of the island of Tenerife, shelters the best examples of the supra-Mediterranean vegetation level. On the other hand, with an average altitude of over 2,000 metres, the Mt. Teide National Park offers one of the most spectacular examples of vulcanism in the world and represents the best example of alpine volcanic ecosystem in the Canary Islands

From a geo-morphological point of view, the structure of the caldera and the Teide-Pico Viejo strato-volcano are among the most spectacular geological monuments in the world, apart from the wide variety of volcanic cones and domes, lava flows, tors and caves that form a range of colours and forms that increase the scientific and scenic interest of the area. With regard to the enormous biological wealth of the area, the outstanding flora includes a large percentage of endemic species and the invertebrate fauna a large number of exclusive species. This National Park, created in 1954 in recognition of its volcanic and biological singularity, is the largest and the oldest of the National Parks of the Canary Islands, covering an area of 18,990 hectares, and the fifth largest of the thirteen National Parks in the network. Apart from its Peripheral Protection Zone, this natural area is surrounded by the Corona Forestal Nature Park, the largest protected natural area of the Canary Islands with 46,612.9 hectares. In 1989, it was awarded a class A European Diploma by the Council of Europe. This European Diploma was extended in 1994, 1999, 2004 and 2009 (this last time for ten years). The Teide National Park Board and the Joint Canary Island National Parks Commission held several meeting in 2002 to have the Mt. Teide National Park declared a World Heritage Site. As a result of this initiative the Teide National Park was included in the list of World Heritage sin summer 2007.

Historic Centre of Puerto de la Cruz

Historic Centre located in Tenerife North

The historic quarter of the district of Puerto de la Cruz was declared a Historic Artistic Area in 1985. It combines a long history with a nautical flavour as up to the 18th century it was the port of the town of La Orotava. It also has the liveliness and drive of the tourist resort it is today and has been since the 19th century, when it was one of the pioneering tourist resorts in Spain and Europe. Historical and modern features mix in a traditionally nautical district.

From the central and ever-busy square known as, the Plaza de El Charco, the pedestrian streets lead passers-by to buildings of great historical value, such as the Chapel of San Telmo, the Casa Miranda, the old hotel Marquesa, the Church of la Peña de Francia and the Casa de la Aduana. Next to the harbour is the equally charming fishing neighbourhood of La Ranilla. A little further away is the Botanical Gardens founded in the 17th century to acclimatise plant species brought from South America, Africa and Asia.

Historic Centre of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Historic Centre located in the metropolitan of Tenerife

The historic quarter of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, capital of the island is located in the area of the city closest to the sea next to its important commercial port. Here, among the pedestrian streets lined with shops, restaurants and other establishments there are various buildings, which show the historical origins of the city. One example is the church, Iglesia de la Concepción first built in 1500, though it was rebuilt in 1653.

The church was the centre of the original town of Santa Cruz, which until 1859 was just the port for the nearby town of La Laguna. Nowadays, close to the church is the street called "La Noria."  It has a great nightlife with its traditional houses converted into bars and tascas. The church, the Iglesia de San Francisco, squares such as, the Plaza Príncipe de Asturias and the Plaza de La Candelaria or the municipal market Nuestra Señora de África are just some of the essential stops on your route round this area, where the old and the new intermingle.

Historic Centre of La Laguna

Historic Centre located in the metropolitan area of Tenerife

San Cristóbal de La Laguna, declared a World Cultural and Heritage Site by Unesco, has maintained its highly valued historic centre in an exemplary state of conservation. As well as important monuments and historic buildings, there is an important centre of commercial activity, offering the chance to buy souvenirs to remember your visit to the island: fashion, Tenerife wines, Canarian craftwork and typical gastronomical products. The city has an important university tradition, thus providing the liveliness and relaxed atmosphere of its countless tascas.

El Médano

A golden sand beach located in Tenerife South

El Médano Beach is in the district of Granadilla de Abona, next to the small seaside resort of the same name. It is the longest beach on the island, a two-kilometre stretch of fine golden sand that ends at a volcanic cone called "Montaña Rojo" (Red Mountain). The surrounding area is a protected nature reserve due to its important ecological value. The beach has a range of facilities and a very pleasant seafront walk to stroll along.

Above all, El Médano beach stands out for being the ideal place to go windsurfing. The winds in this area, especially from spring to September, do not deter other beachgoers who enjoy the calm, shallow waters of this beach and a family-friendly atmosphere where locals and tourists from all over the world mix happily together.
